Author Guidelines

This document provides details on style, typesetting, and layout requirements pertaining to manuscript submissions to Research on Diversity in Youth Literature.

Submitting Your Article

  • Manuscripts must not contain any identifying information, such as authors’ names, institutions, etc.
  • Authors must also submit a 100-word abstract.
  • Authors must prepare a list of keywords.

Style

  • Follow the MLA Handbook, 9th edition.
  • Footnotes should appear at the bottom of each page. Footnotes should be in 10 pt. Times or closest comparable font available, they should be single spaced, and there should be a footnote separator rule (line). Footnote numbers or symbols in the text must follow, rather than precede, punctuation. All footnotes should be left justified.
  • After the last sentence of your submission, please insert a page break and begin your Works Cited on a new page. Your article, including Works Cited, should be submitted as one document.
  • Authors may consult The Elements of Style by William Strunk, Jr. and E. B. White for style.
  • It is the author's decision whether to demarcate shifts in language with italics (i.e. words in a language other than English).

Format

  • Your essay must be 4,000-6,000 words, or about 20-24 pages (including footnotes and Works Cited pages).
  • Submit your abstract, manuscript, including tables, figures, images, Works Cited, etc., as a single file (Word or PDF files are accepted).
  • Page size should be 8.5 x 11-inches.
  • All margins (left, right, top and bottom) should be 1 inch, including your tables, figures, and images.
  • Double space your text.
  • Use a single column layout with both left margin justified.
  • Font:
    1. Main Body—12 pt. Times or the closest comparable font available
    2. Footnotes—10 pt. Times or the closest comparable font available
  • Set the font color to black for the majority of the text. We encourage authors to take advantage of the ability to use color in the production of figures, maps, etc., however, this might cause some readers problems when they print the document on a black & white printer.
  • Whenever possible use italics to indicate text you wish to emphasize rather than underlining it. Do not use color to emphasize text.
  • Copyedit your manuscript. If accepted, the co-editors reserve the right to make minor copyedits without the final approval of the author(s).

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word or PDF document file format.
  • The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
