INNOVATION in Shelby County

DISHWASHER

Josephine Garis Cochran invented the first useful dishwasher in Shelbyville, IL and received patent #355,139 on December 28, 1886. Cochrane, a wealthy woman who entertained often, wanted a machine that could wash dishes faster than her servants, and without breaking them. Her dishwasher went on to be a part of the company known today as KitchenAid.

HAY BALER

Horace M. Tallman is credited for the invention of the pickup hay baler in 1928-1929. This invention is recognized for having a significant impact on modern agriculture. Although he passed away in 1929, his sons and engineer Raymond D. MacDonald continue to devleop and market the baler after his passing. Patent record for Shelby County show Tallman develops a hay press in 1904, 1906, and 1907. Other patent records show several pickup hay baler patents for the Tallman family throughout the years.

HAIR PINS

Sta-Rite incorporates in September 10, 1917, the same year S. E. Creech and Perry Bland patent the first celluloid flare-end hair pin. In 1921, they manufacture the first wire flare-end hair pin with George C. Bolinger as president of the company. In 1928, Sta-rite makes the first boby pins using their patent design. Over the years, Sta-Rite and the Bolinger family go on to patent many styles of hair styling products and other products such as flashlights, fireplaces, warning signals, and more! The family business is still in production today.
