The Fifth Annual Cycle, and Cantatas Outside the Annual Cycle Repertoire

Unfortunately the fifth annual cycle cannot be recognized clearly, even in outline—to say nothing of its reconstruction. Here again, it does not involve a clearly unified set like the chorale cantata annual cycle. Even so, we have at least some evidence of composition of church cantatas after 1730, such as both oratorios for Christmas and Ascension BWV 248 and 11 as well as the cantata fragments BWV 200, 248a and 1045, so that the possibility of a "late" annual cycle is within the realm of possibility. Even so, the likelihood of a complete annual cycle after 1730 is admittedly not at all high. However, the fact that Bach continued to be concerned with cantata composition can be clearly seen in the significant number of new works after 1730.
