Study abroad programs and international research have been critiqued for the way they open up global south spaces for scholarly consumption and academic voyeurism. Yet in the antiapartheid movement of the 1980s and 90s as well as the current solidarity tours to Cuba and southern Africa, group tours have been an effective pedagogic tool for constructing transnational solidarities, as demonstrated by the account of these tours organized by Chicago-based lifelong activist Prexy Nesbitt.
