Enrolling as Cherokee Freedmen: Social Networks of Rejected Applicants

Robert Barnes

Robert Barnes (Freedman applicant) was born in Sequoyah on the Cale Starr place to Sam Barnes and Jenny/Jennie Barnes. According to his account, he was born around 1868. He was living in Foreman, Sequoyah district, at the time of his application. He was a half-brother to Lula Knalls.

Robert Barnes claimed to be enrolled on the Wallace Roll. However, Commissioner Breckinridge did not identify him on the rolls of 1880 or 1896, nor the Kern-Clifton Roll. Because his mother, Jenny/Jennie Barnes, was not on the roll of 1880, and her return to the Cherokee Nation within the period required by the Treaty of 1866 was considered “of indefinite character,” he was placed on a doubtful card.
