Enrolling as Cherokee Freedmen: Social Networks of Rejected Applicants

George W. Vann

George W. Vann recognized that his status as a Cherokee Freedman was a matter of controversy ever since he was in Benge. While he stayed in the Cherokee Nation all along, two sisters of his went to Texas with Sallie Mayfield (Cherokee). He was eighty-seven years old in 1901. George testified for Sallie Mayfield (Freedmen applicant) on April 12, 1901, and corrected his testimony in the same month.
