A Final Link From a Lost Arctic Expedition: A Letter by Sir John Franklin (1845)

About this Edition

In 2017, Adam Doskey of the Rare Book and Manuscript Library (RBML) at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, approached SourceLab with a digital copy of the letter now held by the RBML.

We hope this edition will help scholars who are studying the history of exploration and the Arctic. It is intended for teachers, students, and the general public. The edition includes an added map that displays the locations of significant events relating to the expedition.

We slightly altered the images that were originally given to us, to fit into Scalar's format. We cropped down the images and converted them into JPEG files.

The letter itself can be difficult to read and is illegible at the bottom. To accompany our digital facsimile of the source, we added a transcription of the legible parts of the letter, along with notes and commentary.

The citation for the original source from which our copy was digitized is:

Sir John Franklin to Sir John Richardson, 6 July 1845, Item 173, Papers Relating to the 1837-1849 Search for Sir John Franklin's Expedition, Urbana, University of Illinois Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Post-1650 MS 0051.
