A Medieval Surgery, Illustrated: The First Recorded Surgical Separation of Conjoined Twins

Types of surgeons

There existed a hierarchy, however informal, among surgeons during the Middle Ages; (from high to low ranking) professionals, barber surgeons, and empirics.

The aforementioned professional surgeons were likely entrusted with this daring operation because they objectively had the most expertise and the best chance of success.

Barber surgeons, aptly named for the fact that they were in fact, barbers, also performed minor procedures like bloodletting or teeth pulling. They sometimes also had the capacity to treat wounds, mend fractures, or amputate limbs.

Empirics, the lowest within this hierarchy, often only specialized in treating one condition – ex. Bone fractures or bladder stones. They were the least familiar with surgery among all the divisions of surgeons.
