A Russian Funeral Film: The Funeral of Anastasia Vial'tseva

About this Edition

In 2019, Matthew Klopfenstein approached Sourcelab with funeral films of Vera Kholodnaia and Anastasia Vial'tseva interested in their origins, context, and potential online presence. Subsequently, we decided to focus solely on the film of Anastasia Vial’tseva in order to provide a more focused analysis. This edition places this film in the context of Russian film and society in the early 1900s.

As the basis for this edition, we have taken:

Anastasia Vial’tseva The Funeral of Vial’tseva on February 5, 1913. (Poxorony Vya'tsevoi 5 (18) Febralya 1913 goda) 2010. Video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcuax1H9neI

This seems to be the fullest version currently digitized.

We have made no changes to the digitized copy presented on YouTube. We have, however, added pop-up annotations identifying the events in the film. In some cases, the subject matter of some scenes remains unknown or is too blurry to discern so we have included our closest approximation. All translations from Russian have been done with the help of Klopfenstein, a PhD Candidate in History at the University of Illinois.

The Russian Copyright Law of 1993 stipulates that creative works are under copyright for 50 years after the author's death. Aleksandr Khanzhonkov died in 1945, and therefore the copyright on the funeral film of Anastasia Vial’tseva expired in 1995. We believe it now to be in the public domain.
