Enrolling as Cherokee Freedmen: Social Networks of Rejected Applicants

Joseph Rowe

Joseph Rowe (Freedmen applicant) was the son of Jesse and Parmelia Rowe. He was born in Texas and lived there until around 1886, when he returned to the Cherokee Nation. In 1894, he married a Cherokee citizen, but claimed citizenship through both parents. His wife drew payment from the Cherokee Nation through her recognized citizenship; however, Joseph was unable to do the same. He subsequently applied for enrollment for his children Clarinda, Osa, and Loma, all born in the Cherokee Nation.

When the Wallace Roll was taken, he was living with maternal grandfather, Colis/Callus Jones.
