Gentlemen Prefer Blondes: A Critical Edition

“GOLD DIGGERS”

That section of the female of the species that has by vampire methods earned the sobriquet “gold diggers” gets full and funny publicity in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” or the intimate diary of a professional lady, by Anita Loos (Boni & Liveright, New York; $1.75). It is a bit of humorous satire in Broadway dialect, “if you get what I mean,” as the heroine frequently observes. With a companion of the same type she exploits such members of the moneyed class in New York, London, Paris and Vienna as are ready to be beguiled by her blandishments: and her accomplishments in annexing costly jewelry from all and sundry are really remarkable. The story goes that the young author wrote the first chapter to while away the tedium of a trip from New York to Hollywood and a magazine editor accepted it at sight and called for more; therefore five others followed, and what the future may have in store concerning these adventuresses we can only guess.
