Overview of Visual Variants
In addition to the changes in textual features, the republication of Blondes as a book changed the visual experience of the text. In addition to removing the text from its original context "lost among the ads" to center it in a stand-alone volume, the production team at Boni & Liveright reproduced Ralph Barton's illustrations. These reproductions, while they maintain the content of the illustrations (minus one), were of significantly different quality and placed in a different relationship to the text. The pages that follow offer side-by-side views of the illustrations in the magazine and book editions, and a bird's-eye view of the changes in layout between the two editions.
