Irma McClaurin, PHD

Irma McClaurin, PhD is a woman of many talents. She is a black feminist speaker and award-winning author, diversity strategist, leadership consultant and guru, and a champion of diversity, equity and inclusiveness. McClaurin motto is: “change hearts, change minds, and change behavior-achieve transformation.”  Her leadership experience cuts across numerous sectors, including higher education, philanthropy, non-profits, and the United States government.  She is a past President of Shaw University, and her other leadership roles include Chief Diversity Officer at Teach For America, Senior Faculty at the Federal Executive Institute, Program Officer for Education and Scholarship at the Ford Foundation, Associate Vice President and founding Executive Director of the University of Minnesota’s first Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center. McClaurin has held tenured positions in anthropology at the University of Florida and the University of Minnesota, and was the Mott Distinguished Chair and founder of the Africana Women’s Studies Program at Bennett College for Women.  A recognized expert on gender, race, intersectionality, and diversity models, McClaurin is action-oriented, a truth-teller, and an advocate for change. Her book,Black Feminist Anthropology: Theory, Politics, Praxis, and Poetics was published by Rutgers in 2001 and selected as an “Outstanding Academic Title” by Choice Magazine in 2002. According to readers, “Black Feminist Anthropology saved my life.”  She authored the policy document that became the National Plan for Family Violence in Belize, Central America, and currently is an expert witness for vulnerable populations seeking immigration asylum because of gender violence. She is also a Fulbright Specialist from 2017-2020.
