Using Google Cardboard

Linked on this page are edited versions of the stereographs which were described in our edition. The stereographs were edited with the intent of being viewed through a Google Cardboard viewer, or any other viewer which was intended for use with a smart-phone. Additionally, the original cardstock back has been replaced with a black background to facilitate the 3-D effect.

The images have been edited minimally in order to keep the document as close to its original state as possible. However, the captions have been removed in order to make them viewable, depriving the images of their full context.

The images were cropped to the exact dimensions of an iPhone X screen but are viewable with any model of phone. The border around the image should be all black; if not, zooming in so that there is no white or transparent border will prepare the image for proper viewing in the Google Cardboard viewer. Here, the image should be centered in the viewer, with the dividing line of the two images centered on the nosepiece, so that the viewer can experience the stereoscopic effect.

Alternatively, if you do not have a viewer nor intend to purchase one, we have created GIFs which are viewable from any device. The 3-D effect created by GIFs does not give the viewer the same experience but can be helpful to understanding how this technology works.
