The Birth of Pussy Riot: Six Early Songs

Blog Post for “Free the Cobblestones”

“WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE SONG ‘FREE THE COBBLESTONES’ FOR THE CLIP?

The [State Duma] elections are on the way. Thanks to Mayor Sobyanin, there are now lots of cobblestones on the streets of Moscow. They should be used for their intended purpose.

The song ‘Free the Cobblestones’ is dedicated to elections in general. You should spit on the polling stations because your ballots will [just] be used as toilet paper by the Presidential Administration. On December 4, we’re proposing that you should go outside with us and get some fresh air.

Besides that, we’re also crazy about a couple of other things we mentioned in our song. First off, we’re outraged by the [proposed] clearing of the Khimki Forest and the boorish pressure on the campaign to protect it by state bandits. Secondly, an anti-abortion law that a large-scale feminist campaign has been protesting since the spring of 2011 has recently been adopted and that really pisses [us] off.”1
