The Birth of Pussy Riot: Six Early Songs

"Direct action"...

Continuing with this thought in mind, Pussy Riot shifts from a philosophical vendetta to more of a physical one with the line “‘direct action’ is the future of humanity.” I put “direct action” in quotes here to indicate that it is highly likely that Pussy Riot is specifically referencing the political activism term that describes when actors use their power to reach certain desired goals. Direct action as an activity can be both violent and nonviolent, but as prefaced both in previously discussed songs and later on in this one, Pussy Riot advocates for non-violence. To clarify, they are explicitly directing their audience to take physically non-violent action in tandem with philosophically violent action (as in it is jarring and powerful) against their enemies as a part of this “protest.”
