The Birth of Pussy Riot: Six Early Songs

Leads protesters to holding cells under escort

This line is difficult to completely translate, as “holding cells” doesn’t entirely encompass the original Russian, which refers to protestors being sent to SIZO, an acronym for Sledstvennyĭ izoliator. SIZO are essentially detention centers that hold suspects and accused persons while they are being interrogated or awaiting trial. In a cruel act of fate, Pussy Riot would wind up in a similar place during the months before their criminal trial for the actions of their “Punk Prayer.”
