The Birth of Pussy Riot: Six Early Songs

penis envy

This is a reference to Sigmund Freud’s theory of “penis envy,” (Penisneid) which, stemming from the idea of the Oedipus complex, speculates that during the period of time when young girls are sexually developing, they realize they do not and will never have a penis. This creates both anxiety for them and shifts their view of their mothers into becoming competition for their father’s affection. The opposite of this for men is “castration anxiety” (Kastrationsangst).
