The Birth of Pussy Riot: Six Early Songs

...so defend the fatherland!

Another point of interest is my translation of otechestvo as fatherland and not as motherland. As a nation, Russia is commonly personified as a woman, take Mother Russia (Matushka Rossiya) as an example, but I believe that here Pussy Riot is intentionally contrasting the nationalist, patriarchal catchphrase “To Defend the Fatherland” (Zashchishchat’ Otechestvo) with the groups they are directing its defense towards—the youth, LGBTQ+ members, and feminists. According to Article 59 of the Russian Federation’s Constitution, “Defending the Fatherland” (Zashchita Otechestvo) is even considered a constitutional duty for Russian citizens.
