The Birth of Pussy Riot: Six Early Songs

The Perpetual Virgin Mary is with us during protests!

Scholar Nicholas Denysenko again agrees with my interpretation of the significance of The Holy Belt of the Virgin’s touring of Russia, stating “The timing of the Pussy Riot event at Christ the Savior appears to be deliberate, occurring on February 21, 2012, three months after the visit of Mary’s Belt . . . so the memory of the celebration and the Church’s communication of its significance to the public was fresh.” He then goes on to explain the belt’s significance to the Russian Orthodox Church in great detail, “[Patriarch Kirill] consistently alluded to Mary’s traditional power to bestow grace upon the Russian Church and people and protect them from trouble and tribulation. Kyrill’s teaching is not original here, as he draws upon a theological motif deeply embedded throughout the Church of the Byzantine tradition, namely that Mary is the mediatrix who intercedes with God on behalf of the Orthodox people and through whom God imparts divine grace . . . [Patriarch Kirill] draws deep into the well of Russian piety and devotion to Mary and reintroduces it through a public and grandiose celebration of Mary’s history of healing her people. Kyrill’s petition to Mary is to assume her position and exercise her office of maternal stewardship of Russia."
