It is a method of sung worship that was inherited from Byzantium but was then built upon syntactically in Old Church Slavonic. The reason Seraphima asked her bandmates to learn these (or some) liturgical chants is because the chorus of the song “Virgin Mary, Mother of God, Chase Putin Away” purposefully has an Orthodox hymn-like quality and style to it.
