Timbaland and the Neptunes (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo) are super producers from Virginia who have worked on a number of songs with Jay Z. Timbaland and the Neptunes have produced songs across various genres that have landed on the Billboard’s Hot 100.
Timbaland first contributed to a Jay Z project in 1998 when he produced two songs on Vol. 2... Hard Knock Life—“Paper Chase” and “Nigga What, Nigga Who (Originator 99).” The producer worked on at least one song on 7 of Jay Z’s 12 albums. Timbaland’s producer credits include “Big Pimpin,” “Jigga What, Jigga Who,” “On the Run Pt. 2,” and “Picasso Baby.” On The Black Album, Timbaland produced the albums second single “Dirt Off Your Shoulder.” The gesture of dusting your shoulder off became closely associated with Jay Z and played itself out across popular culture.
Timbaland began his career in the early 1990s producing R&B songs. In 1996, he produced the majority of the music on Aaliyah’s second album One in a Million and Ginuwine's debut album Ginuwine...the Bachelor. Timbaland’s career took off after the success of these albums. Since then, Timbaland has worked with a diverse set of artists producing songs like Fabulous’s “Make Me Better,” Ginuwine’s “Get Your Freak On,” Missy Elliot’s “Get Your Freak On,” Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me a River,” Madonna’s “4 Minutes,” Nelly Furtardo’s “Promiscuous,” and “Apologize” featuring One Republic. Timbaland and his production team are also credited with composing and writing songs for Fox’s primetime television drama Empire.
Initially Timbaland wanted to be a DJ, and before gaining national success, he formed the group “Surrounded by Idiots” with The Neptunes, Williams and Hugo along with local rapper Magoo. The group later disbanded, but similar to Timbaland, Pharrell and Chad would go on to be extremely successful.
Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo have also had a consistent working relationship with Jay Z beginning with “The City Is Mine” produced by Teddy Riley where Chad Hugo played the saxophone in the background. A year later The Neptunes produced “I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)” on Jay Z’s The Dynasty: Roc La Familia. The Neptunes track was the albums lead single peaking at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Neptunes also produced “Change Clothes” from The Black Album. The song reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 2003. On Jay Z’s The Black Album, the Neptunes produced albums lead single “Changed Clothes” as well as “Allure.”
Pharrell and Chad met at The Gifted and Talented, a summer camp in Virginia Beach. After graduating high school, the duo started working with Teddy Riley, who’s recording studio was close to Pharrell’s school. In 1994, Pharrell and Chad formally established themselves as the Neptunes and produced a few songs for R&B groups of the mid to late 90s such as Blackstreet, Total, and SWV.
They have gone on to produce songs such as Usher’s “You Don’t Have to Call,” Nelly’s “Hot in Herre,” N’Sync’s “Girlfriend,” Justin Timberlake’s “Rock Your Body,” and Gwen Stefani’s “Wind it Up.”
Collectively, Timbaland and the Neptunes have produced some of the most memorable songs in Jay Z’s catalogue.
