The producer chart confirms that Just Blaze and Kanye West made substantial contributions to Jay Z’s music. These two are arguably the most consequential producers for Jay Z’s music. Just Blaze and Kanye both worked on 6 out of 12 of the Brooklyn-rapper’s solo albums.
Just Blaze first appeared as a producer on the The Dynasty (2000), producing the intro and four additional tracks: “Streets is Talking,” “Stick 2 the Script,” “The R.O.C.,” and “Soon You’ll Understand.” Just Blaze went on to produce songs on Jay Z’s The Blueprint (2001), The Blueprint 2 (2002), and The Black Album (2003).
On the Black Album, Just Blaze produced what Jay Z proclaimed to be the “next” Black National Anthem, “Public Service Announcement.” The interlude samples Little Boy Blues’s 1968 soul song “Seeds of Love.” “Public Service Announcement,” with its Just Blaze’s “black power”-esque monologue, is one of Jay Z’s most popular songs.
Kanye first contributed to The Dynasty, producing the song “This Can’t Be Life,” which samples “I Miss You” by Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes. Kanye later produced memorable hits by Jay Z, including “Izzo (H.O.V.A.),” “Heart of the City,” “Takeover,” “Encore,” “Lucifer,” and “Run this Town” to name a few. Kanye has a reputation of sampling from a rich history of music in his compositions for Jay Z. Kanye instilled Jay Z’s music with a sense of soulfulness by sampling music by The Jackson 5, David Ruffin, and Marvelettes.
As a rapper and producer, Kanye’s work can be described as repurposing an existing song with a contemporary hip hop vibe. He’s known for picking out an obscure phrase or taking the most popular melody from a song and building an entirely new and electrifying track.
On the Blueprint 2, Kanye West produced “A Dream” sampling the drums from The 5th Dimension’s “The Rainmaker,” various elements from Blackjack’s “Stay” and also incorporating the first verse from The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Juicy.” Similarly, “03 Bonnie & Clyde” samples the melody from Makaveli’s “Me and My Girlfriend” and vocals from Prince’s “If I Was Your Girlfriend.” And on the Black Album, Kanye produced the song “Lucifer” which samples Max Romeo’s “Chase the Devil” throughout the entire song.
Kanye and Jay Z have also worked on a collaborative album Watch The Throne that had hits such as “N*ggas in Paris” and “No Church in the Wild.” The album's lead single “Otis” samples the late Otis Redding’s “Try a Little Tenderness” as Jay Z and Kanye play on the word “tenderness to actually mean money.”
After finishing the recording of Watch the Throne, Jay Z recorded two new songs, “Holy Grail” and “Oceans.” He let his partner hear the tracks and, immediately, Kanye wanted to include the songs on the collaborative project.
It was reported that Kanye and Jay Z went back and forth with each other for four days before Jay Z explained to Kanye why the songs were so important to his 12th solo album. “Holy Grail” later became the lead single on Magna Carta Holy Grail.
