“Shining Stars: African American Women Authors of the Civil War Era” is a digital humanities project that was developed through the collaboration of the Black Book Interactive Project (BBIP) Digital Publishing Scholars Program, funded by an NEH Digital Humanities Advancement Grant, and African American Studies Publishing Without Walls 2 (AFRO PWW 2), funded by the Mellon Foundation.
This collaboration provided a variety of educational programs and experiences, plus a set of staff for technical assistance.
I am especially thankful for the assistance of Alex Dryden, University of Illinois, who made sure that my “joy” was maintained throughout the various permutations of this project. I greatly appreciate the assistance of Mary Ton, University of Illinois, who guided the development of the project’s foundation. This foundation inspired subsequent growth and expansion.
Each of the project directors, marilyn thomas-houston, Ronald William Bailey, Ayesha K Hardison, and Maryemma Graham (now retired), recognized the important value of this collection of authors as a digital humanities project before I did; for that I am grateful.
My editor, Heather Witcher, provided tremendous assistance. She quickly grasped my concepts and effectively focused me.
This project had humble beginnings as a Word document with links. It evolved into a Library of Congress Web Guide, then a LibGuide. I am thankful to Kris Pruzin for being my inspiration to create a nontraditional Library of Congress Web Guide.
I sincerely appreciate the technical support provided by Angela McMillian for both the Library of Congress Web Guide and LibGuide.
