An essay on the interrelationships among organisms, comparing classification hierarchies with more complex "functional" relations.  Touches on life histories, variation and inheritance, natural selection, disturbance, the impact of interacting species on each other, and the influence of human activity.   Argues the importance of studying and understanding the natural world.
