Courtship, Community, and Conflict: Montgomery County in the Civil War

George Harkey

George Harkey was born in Montgomery County and was a carpenter before he enlisted in the 126th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment in August of 1862. He was twenty-two years old when he enlisted and was reported to be 5’8 with black hair and gray eyes. He achieved the rank of corporal and traveled across Tennessee and Arkansas during his service with the regiment until he was mustered out in July of 1865. After the war, he got married back in Montgomery County to Zereldah Low in 1871. He passed away in February of 1922.
