Patrick sent letters back to Sophronia throughout the Civil War. He enlisted in the 9th Illinois Volunteer Infantry on July 28th, 1861 and was mustered into service the same day. The 9th Illinois Volunteer Infantry fought in large battles across Kentucky including the Battle of Fort Donelson and the Battle of Shiloh. Patrick served for over three years and mustered out of the regiment on August 20th, 1864.
