Courtship, Community, and Conflict: Montgomery County in the Civil War

Thomas Moynihan

Thomas Moynihan was born in Montgomery County and was a cousin-in-law of Sophronia McNitt and the brother of Patrick Moynihan, whose letters are also featured in this edition. Thomas Moynihan served in the 126th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment, which served at the Siege of Vicksburg in Mississippi in 1863. He mustered in on August 21st, 1862 at the age of twenty. His military records report him to have been 5’4 with auburn hair and blue eyes. He served until July 12th, 1865 and achieved the rank of corporal during his service. He was a farmer by trade and returned to farming after the war until his early death in July of 1871.
