Brown was born in Irving, Illinois in 1839. He married Mary A. Edwards in 1861 at the age of 22. A year later he enlisted with the Union army as a Corporal and was discharged on August 4th, 1865 as a Sergeant. William served in the 126th Illinois Infantry Regiment, F company under Lieutenant Hussey with whom he fought at the Battle of Vicksburg and Battle of Bayou Fourche. William maintained a correspondence during his service with his cousin Sophronia, whom he wrote about mundane army life and his thoughts on the progress of the war. He died in 1881 in Filmore, Illinois.
