Gentlemen Prefer Blondes: A Critical Edition

H.L. Mencken

H.L. Mencken was a prominent journalist, editor, and cultural commentator with a penchant for satire, who Anita Loos cited in several accounts of the genesis of Blondes as her intellectual idol and the originally intended private audience of its first chapter.  She also cited Mencken as the reason for Lorelei's home town of Little Rock, Arkansas. The "green magazine" refers to The American Mercury, edited by Mencken and George Jean Nathan beginning in 1924. Mencken suggested to Loos that she publish the first chapter of Blondes in Harper's Bazar because it wasn't serious enough for The American Mercury (Loos, A Girl Like I).
