Gentlemen Prefer Blondes: A Critical Edition

Moulin Rouge

The Moulin Rouge was famous as a location where the well-to-do could attend performances of the cancan dance (a variant of the quadrille). It had burned down in 1915 but reopened as an attraction in the 1920s. Its entry and the source of its name was a huge red windmill.
